🚛 Did you know? Everything you need to know to tow a trailer while staying compliant with the highway code! 👮

Towing a Trailer: Essential Rules to Follow

🔹 Required Licenses

  • B: Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) ≤ 3,500 kg and trailer ≤ 750 kg.
  • B96: If the total weight (vehicle + trailer) remains ≤ 4,250 kg.
  • BE: Mandatory if the GCWR exceeds 3,500 kg and is below 7,000 kg.

🔹 Weight and Load Distribution

  • The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is indicated on the vehicle registration certificate and must never be exceeded to avoid fines and immobilization.
  • WARNING: Poor load distribution affects stability, braking, and road handling. A minimum load of 25 to 50 kg on the hitch is recommended.

🔹 Braking and Visibility

  • Brakes are mandatory for trailers over 750 kg, along with a parking brake.
  • An additional mirror is required if the trailer is wider than the vehicle.
  • Lights, indicators, and reflective devices are mandatory for visibility. A warning triangle is required in case of breakdown.

🔹 Identification and Documents

  • License plate (same as the car for trailers < 500 kg; otherwise, the one from the trailer’s registration certificate for trailers > 500 kg).
  • Tare plate (showing Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and axle load).
  • Manufacturer’s plate (showing the trailer’s manufacturer name).
  • A registration certificate is required for trailers over 500 kg.
